Why does my LCD TV show a black screen for 30 minutes when first turned on?

Why does my LCD TV show a black screen for 30 minutes when first turned on?

No warranty. When it was working, there was a very short warm up time. It used to show the input it was on in the upper right hand corner after the short warm up. If you look at the back you can see light coming into the screen, it act's like it's not getting the input from a card to make it show anything on the screen. The only reason I don't think it's a HDMI cable is, with a bad cable it should show no signal in the bottom left corner as if the tv was the only thing on.  If I just leave it turned on all the time it's not a problem, the picture comes right up when the DVR is turn on

How can I recover data from a hard drive that is no longer detected?

How can I recover data from a hard drive that is no longer detected?
Downloaded Parted Magic (pmagic-pxe-6.6-x86-64). On opening the zip file, I could not find any .exe file but two folders, boot and pmagic. Iam not a computer techie but a normal home user so I am in a quandary as to how I should proceed. Please bear with me and request you to kindly take me through the paces. I have a licensed version of Easeus Partition Wizard but am not too sure how to use it. Also, in my initial request, I had forgotten to mention that when I connect my faulty disk as an external storage disk in the USB port, I hear a constant "tick tick" sound which I am told is a mechanical failure. Could this be the root cause of my problem and could you offer any solution? Thanking you in the meanwhile.
Do not double click to open the zip file. Zip files must be extracted, this can be done with a number of programs such as UniExtract  http://www.filehippo.com/downl...
7-zip http://www.7-zip.org/
Once extracted you should have a folder, double click to open, now you should see an ISO file PartedMagic x.x.iso. You now need to burn this file as an image using a burning program such as ImgBurn, or CDburnerXP http://www.imgburn.com/
http://cdburnerxp.se/en/downlo...
This would most likely be the version of PartedMagic you would need http://sourceforge.net/project...
Once you have the disk burned, be sure your computer is configured to boot from CD and boot from it. Good luck there is a learning curve with recovery and using recovery software. Yes the ticking is a sign of mechanical failure, you may not get but a brief amount of time to attempt recovery.
You may want to reconsider Recuva or a downloaded Linux distro such as Mint-11 http://www.linuxmint.com/downl... to try to copy the most important files.See Jeffery's post below. The Mint-11 ISO would be burned as an image with the same programs mentioned above .

How can I create playlists based on how often a I listen to a song?

Some modern music library programs have smart playlists that let you set a certain criteria that bumps a song onto the play list. Some examples would be if a song has been played "X" times, it will be on the playlist. Songbird is really good at doing this.

##
open winamp >> media library (alt+l) >> most played >>select al >>press enter >>save playlist (ctrl+s).

worked for me.

How much virtual memory is necessary in Windows 7?

How much virtual memory is necessary in Windows 7?

As a general rule of thumb, you should have double the amount of virtual memory as you do ram. So if you have 8GB's of ram, you should allocate 16GB's of virtual memory. However my current system (Windows 7 8GB's of RAM; used for programming and gaming) has 4GB's of virtual memory available, but it usually only uses about 1GB max. That's because typically developers don't prefer to store data in virtual memory, rarely is it necessary. With ram being so cheap, developers have forgotten about optimization and instead dump everything into RAM.

You should also configure Windows to clear the virtual memory on shutdown to clear up that space. This will add a minute or so to the shutdown process but is good for security and performance.

Recommended for casual computing: 2 - 4GB's
Recommend for casual gaming (D3D/OGL): 5GB's
Recommended for extreme gaming/modeling: 10GB's

How can I recover a Mac hard drive?

How can I recover a Mac hard drive?

If you have a damaged system, you can take out the hard drive out of your computer, put it in a enclosure. Back up your data, and install back the OS from the disc. If the hard drive is really hard to take out (e.g. 2008 imac) but has firewire, you can use firewire target disc mode. You will need a firewire cable and another mac that supports firewire too. backup your stuff again and reinstall the OS
ifixit has good tutorials on how to do such stuff.

Why are my Windows Vista system restore points automatically deleted?

Why are my Windows Vista system restore points automatically deleted?

You, some installer or tweak/cleaning utility turned of System Restore or stopped the System Restore Service temporarily.

- You or some tweak/cleaning utility run the Cleanup agent in "advanced mode" with the setting to delete old restore points.

- You or some tweak changed the maximum restore point age to a very low value (default is 90 days).

- You ran out of disk space at some point. If your disk space is too low restore points are going to be deleted automatically.

Unlikely but still possible are other problems including incorrect system date, not fully compatible Antivirus or Firewall software.

As for troubleshooting I would manually cleanup all restore points at first (using the Windows Cleanup agent, within the advanced setting) and then just set the Disk Space for system Restore to 50% or more. As previously mentioned you don't have to worry about running out of Disk Space since older restore points will be deleted automatically if space is required

How can I allot free space on my hard disk to an already existing drive in Windows?

How can I allot free space on my hard disk to an already existing drive in Windows?

You will need a partition-management utility for this purpose. Allocating free/unutilized or unallocated space to a partition or reallocating space from one partition to another is a fairly easy process. However, as a precaution, it is recommended to backup all important data before-hand. (I never do that since I have uninterrupted power supply and a good quality hard disk that has never failed, but that should never stop anybody from backing-up their data prior to repartitioning their hard drive).

You will have to do these:-
1. Download a decent partition management utility. I recommend EaseUS Partition Master Home Edition ( http://www.partition-tool.com ). It is free, powerful and very simple to use.

2. Install EaseUS and run it. You will see all your hard drive partitions and unallocated space (if any) in both detailed and graphical views. To make more free space in your C: drive, you need to have some unallocated space adjacent to the C: drive. Look at the drive structure in EaseUS, and see if you have any unallocated space before C: drive. If there isn't any unallocated space just after or before C: drive, you can always make some (read point 5 before reading points 3 & 4).

Note: If you find a small System Reserved partition, you should to leave that untouched, since it is used by your operating system and altering it may cause boot problems.

3.(a) If you find an unpartitioned space next to the C: drive, click on the C: drive (from within EaseUS, of course) and click on the Resize/Move button. A "Resize/Move Partition" dialog will open, asking you to decide size and position of the C: drive that you would like it to have. You may move the slider-ends to include all of the adjacent free space(s) or you may type in the size of the new C: drive in the relevant boxes.

3.(b) Alternatively, you may first create a new partition from the unallocated space by clicking on the unallocated space and then clicking the "Create" button. Then, you can merge this new partition with the C: drive by first clicking the C: drive (not the new partition) and then clicking the "Merge" button. Note: You can only merge adjacent partitions.

4. After you have finished re-sizing your C: drive, click OK. You will notice the partition tables have readjusted to your preference. If everything appears as you want it to, click Apply to make the changes permanent. Your computer will restart and your partition changes will be reapplied. This process takes time depending on how much space is being (re)allocated. On successful completion, you will boot into windows. Open My Computer or Disk Management to see your current partition structure. And you're done!!

5. If there isn't any unallocated free space around the C: drive (which is the most probable case), you will need to shrink the drive just next to C: (usually lettered 'D:') in order to add that new space in C: drive. This is what I do when I need to make more room in one particular drive. To do this, click on D: drive (or whichever drive is next to C:. I'll assume it is lettered D:) from within EaseUS Partition Master and click on the Resize/Move button. A "Resize/Move Partition" dialog will open, asking you to decide the size and position of the D: drive. To make space that will be added to C: drive, you will need to move the slider from the LEFT end in order to make unallocated space BEFORE D: drive (since C: drive lies on the left of the D: drive ;) ). Determine how much space you need to add in C:, and adjust the size of D: accordingly. You may also grant all of D: drive's free space to C: if you want (I wouldn't like that on my computer). When done, click OK. You will see an unallocated space has appeared next to C: drive. Now do the steps in point 3 and 4 above to increase the volume of C: drive!

There is a popular open-source utility called GParted that comes in its own Live CD and also with many popular Linux distributions like Puppy Linux. You may also use that to reallocate space on your hard disk. But seeing that you are already using Windows, i feel EaseUS will prove to be the easiest method.

Hope it solves your problem. :)

These drives are probably already mounted. I would burn a Linux Live CD and use the partition manager (GParted for most) to delete the partition. Since you have the install CD, it is probably safe to delete these partitions. However you can create other partitions without deleting the recovery ones. You can have a maximum of 4 primary (bootable) partitions, however you can have as many secondaries as you wish (usually).

What is the fastest laptop I can get?

What is the fastest laptop I can get?

You didn't really state what the computer was going to be used for...

The CPU, memory and hard drive are the biggest dictators of speed. If it's a gaming laptop, the video card will be a huge factor as well. For your CPU, the higher the GHz the better (2.8 GHz or more). Each core acts as a brain which performs computations, the more of them the better.

For memory, it is ideal to have at least 4 gigabytes of ram. For extreme gaming and or video/modeling at least 8 GB's. Too much ram (32GB's) can have a negative influence on your speed if your CPU isn't just as good.

If you want to be on the bleeding edge of fast technology, a solid state hard drive would be best. Otherwise, a SATA with at least 6 GBs input/output speed. Again, the higher the I/O speed the better.

How can I change dynamic volumes to basic volumes in Windows 7?

How can I change dynamic volumes to basic volumes in Windows 7?

I faced a similar problem when I wanted an extra partition for installing Linux in dual-boot mode. I'd done a little research then, and this is what I'd found out:

A hard-drive can have only a maximum of 4 basic partitions. So when you try to create more partitions in Windows 7, it just converts them into dynamic, as in your case.
The problem here is, there is just ONE way of converting dynamic disks back to basic ones - formatting the WHOLE hard-drive (that includes erasing all partitions, etc.)

As far as I know, there is no other way to do it. Though honestly, it didn't bother me much and I kept it that way (for some time).
In case you convert your disks back to dynamic, and want extra partitions later, do not use the Windows tool. Use software like the Easus partition manager to make an
'extended partition', wherein you can make as many partitions as you want.

Can you recommend a cordless three button mouse that won’t need new batteries all the time?

I would recommend you the Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 4000. It´s not expensive, is well built and works really well. Plus, you get side-scrolling in the wheel as well as a customizable side button and a on-off switch. In the packaging it says the battery lasts up to 10 months, altough i've had not used it long enough so see if it's true, but compared to an older mouse i´ve had, which would eat out 2 full batteries in about 12-20 hours time, it's holding together pretty well!

EDIT: Just as i posted this and took the hands off the mouse, the red low battery light started blinking, so now i can tell you you will get at least one and a half month on one Duracell AA Battery. Still, pretty good life compared to what you're currently facing. And a quick update about it's side button (because only now i saw you don't want a side button at all): you can configure it to do absolutely nothing when pressed ;-)

What is the best operating system to host a game on a server?

I've always used Debian for my server projects (I've never hosted a gaming server though). I would recommend a Linux Distribution, not only because their flexible, reliable, secure, highly supported and free, but because most game server hosting companies prefer a Linux based distribution. The game does not need to run on the server (so Linux is fine), it only needs to provide content.

Other recommendations of mine include FedoraGentoo and CentOS. If you have more than 4GB's of ram, you should chose a 64 bit distribution.

Is it possible that someone is eavesdropping on my cell phone conversations?

Is it possible that someone is eavesdropping on my cell phone conversations?

  1. Yes this is very possible. They would not need your number to eavesdrop or exploit vulnerabilities since on a bluetooth network you can't identify the origin of a message anyway. However they would need to be in the path of the sender and receiver or at least near you. However, eavesdropping and spyware are different, though similar. If your phone is infected with spyware, an eavesdropper can plant software onto your phone and record your calls, pinpoint your location using built-in tracking technology (even when the phone is off if battery is in it), send/record/view text messages, etc.
  2. There has been documented cases of this happening, most notoriously when the FBI did it and more recently Rupert Murdock and his criminal gang. In fact it's a very simple process to eavesdrop other cellphone calls. A recent study finds that 73% of all cellphones are vulnerable to such an attack. Fortunately there are a few security persuasions you may take to secure your mobile device, most obvious would be to disable bluetooth capabilities when in a public area and when not in use

The likelihood of a hacker wanting to listen into your conversion with your grandmother discussing your fourth grade arithmetic papers isn't very likely. If you're looking to stop the FBI from snooping into your private life, don't count on being successful because they own this fucking place

2)
I believe my cell conversations are being monitored. If that someone is using Bluetooth spyware, would they need my cell number to actually access my phone.

How can I connect my laptop and my Nokia phone using a Bluetooth dongle?

I have a Toshiba/Equium A210 laptop that does not have Bluetooth installed. I bought a plug-and-play Bluetooth dongle and it installed perfectly.
When I tried to link my Nokia 2720 fold mobile, the mobile found the laptop, but the laptop did not find the mobile (or anything else). I am using Windows Vista. When the mobile asks me to “enter passcode”, I enter 0000 and “enter” and a text balloon appears on my laptop screen asking me if I want to accept the connection, I click the balloon and it just disappears. What is going wrong?
